![]() ![]() Select Properties, and then select Advanced Sharing on the Sharing tab.Press and hold (or right-click) the shared folder. Here's how to share permission to Everyone for the folder you want to share: You may receive these error messages: You do not have permission to access \\ Function Discovery Resource Publication.Change the Startup type property to Automatic for the following services.Go to Search, enter the word Services, and press Enter.Set the startup type of specified services to Automatic to make the computer visible on the network. Select Turn on file and printer sharing under Private. Select Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings. Turn on network discovery and file and printer sharing options by following these steps: Select Programs > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off > SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support.Ĭheck SMB 1.0/CIFS Client, and then press Enter. Notice that Bob still has Full Control, so as a local user, he should be able to modify the permissions to the share and rectify the situation.Įdit: now, how much better are Linux perms, eh? :) Set them at the file / folder level, and boom, done (well, Samba users must be set, but, details).Turn on the SMB 1.0 support feature from Control Panel by following these steps: Well, Windows grants permissions as the most restrictive (taking from both file perms and share perms), so Bob is shit out of luck, cannot see the file and obvious cannot edit it. Say now that you messed up, and went and DENIED Bob read access to the file for the network share. These are the same user, but seen as two different accounts as far as permissions go. So this is, Bob the owner of the file, and Bob the network share user. Now you need to share this file or folder, so you share the file with people on the local network, and allow only Bob to have access to it. So say you have a file on a drive (Z:) called "test.txt", now you made this file with Bob, and Bob has Full Control permissions, including read, write, modify and the rest. Lastly, windows also has groups, but tends to default certain types of permissions for groups, and changing them is a PITA. Moreover, share users and file owners need to be the same to be able to do a lot of edits. The thing to keep in mind with windows is that the files have permissions and the shares have permissions (I know it's confusing as fuck). I must say that windows server is not horrible at file sharing with domain users. Linux is superior for anything work related for sure, especially file sharing. ![]()
